Biography
Dr.
John Zerwas is proud to represent the people of the 28th
District in the Texas House of Representatives. This
district consists of West Fort Bend County, Waller County
and Wharton County. A strong family-values conservative,
Zerwas knows the importance of providing lasting tax relief
while adequately funding our children’s education, ensuring
the safety of our borders and protecting our property
rights.
A physician for over 25 years, Zerwas is one of only two
doctors in the House at a time when Health and Human
Services consumes roughly 40 percent of the state budget and
is the fastest growing area of spending. Zerwas is an
anesthesiologist with Greater Houston Anesthesiologists, a
large group he began several years ago. He has served as the
Chief Medical Officer of the Memorial Hermann Healthcare
System in Houston and as such oversaw programs that have
improved the outcomes of patients with certain medical
conditions while also reducing the cost of treating those
conditions.
His training and experience make him uniquely equipped to
find common-sense solutions to help Texas deal with the
increasing complexities and cost of health care.
John and his wife, Cindy, graduated from Bellaire High
School in 1973 and were married in 1978. Their children –
John, Joseph, Brandon, Sherry and son-in-law Matthew Phelps
– graduated from Lamar Consolidated High School and they have all
graduated from a university in Texas. As a legislator,
parent, and grandfather to Isabella and Matthew Phelps, Zerwas
recognizes the challenges faced by today’s students and
teachers, and will push for a responsible level of education
funding while ensuring that our schools teach the values and
principles upon which our nation was founded.
Zerwas has long demonstrated a strong commitment to faith
and community. He helped form the First Colony Church of
Christ, and was one of its first deacons where his duties
included forming the children’s education and children’s
worship programs. Zerwas worked with the Boy Scouts of
America to establish a troop in the Pecan Grove area,
serving as both cub master and den leader for several years.
He also worked with the boys during the summer camp
programs. Zerwas coached his children’s sports programs, was
active in their booster clubs and served two terms as
president of his homeowner’s association. For several years,
Zerwas went on medical missions to Guatemala with the group
Faith in Practice where he provided anesthesiology for
charity surgeries.
