ZERWAS ASKS GOVERNOR TO RECONSIDER COMMUNITY COLLEGE FUNDING
For Immediate Release
Thursday, June 21, 2007
Austin – On Friday June 15, 2007 Governor Rick Perry vetoed $154 million dollars appropriated for community college health group benefits for fiscal year 2009. Representative John Zerwas, a member of the House Appropriations Committee, expressed his disappointment in the Governor's decision. Specifically, he is disappointed with the fiscal consequences to community and junior colleges.
For example, Wharton County Junior College provides opportunities for higher education for over 6,000 students. Governor Perry's decision will directly effect these students, the staff of the college and all the citizens of Wharton county and surrounding areas.
Community colleges like WCJC offer an affordable and viable local alternative for those who seek to obtain a higher level of education. Representative Zerwas remains very concerned about the rising cost of higher education and in his opinion this veto will force community colleges to raise tuition rates, cut back services and limit student achievement and opportunities.
"I respectfully ask Governor Perry to reconsider his decision, especially in light of the growing contributions community colleges, like Wharton County Junior College, make to the workforce of the State of Texas."
