LFort Bend County anesthesiologist John Zerwas is likely to file in the Republican primary for HD28 on Monday; the seat to be vacated by Rep. Glenn Hegar's run for SD18. Zerwas told QR that he is very close to pulling the triggger and a run is "highly likely."
Zerwas is the chief medical officer and vice-president of the Hermann Memorial Health Care System. He was formerly in a group practice with Senator Kyle Janek (R-Houston) who is also an anesthesiologist.
Zerwas is a past president of the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists and is currently an officer in the national association. Because of his health care background, he is naturally interested in related issues such as medicaid and the uninsured. However, he is also very interested in funding public schools "the right way. His own kids are in public schools and says public education is the greatest asset the state can pursue. He also thinks property taxes and property rights are important to the HD28 voters.
He has been talking with Houston consultant Allen Blakemore and would likely retain him "if he will have me." Zerwas is prepared to put his own money in the race noting that it is a "reflection of the candidate's real commitment."
